Race Day Questions

When is the LA Cancer Challenge and who does it benefit?

The 26th Annual event is on Sunday, October 22, 2023 on the campus of U.C.L.A. in West Los Angeles. In addition, participants across the country have the option of participating in the virtual LACC in their own cities, states and neighborhoods. The event benefits The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Where is the LA Cancer Challenge held?

The LA Cancer Challenge takes place on the beautiful UCLA campus. It starts and finishes in Wilson Plaza.

The 5K is 3.1 miles around the UCLA campus.

Please click here for the complete Race Day Schedule.

Our race offers the option for runners to be chip timed. Each runner will wear a chip timed bib number on the front of their body with a timing chip attached. The chip identifies runners as they cross electronic mats placed at the finish line. Bib numbers and chips can be picked up on race morning, or at Packet Pick Up.

Yes, children of all ages are welcome. Children being pushed in strollers do not need to register. Children running need to be registered. Adults can bring their children and either walk the 5K with them, push them in a stroller, or leave them with another adult from your party in the expo area while you race. (There will be lots for kids to do but they need to be supervised). Each year we have children as young as five walk or run the entire 5K. We also ask that families walking the race start at the back of the line and allow the competitive runners to take off first.

Our Fit Family Expo will feature food and beverage samples from our sponsors.

Please, for the safety of all runners, bikes, rollerblades, dogs, scooters, heelies, etc are not permitted along the race course. We encourage you to bike, blade or scooter to UCLA, just not along the course with the runners and walkers.

If you would like to save time on race morning, you can come pick up your running bib, timing chip, t-shirt and gift bag at Packet Pick Up.

If you cannot make it to Packet Pick Up, that's ok too! Simply arrive with ample time on race morning and proceed to the Pre-Registration Area.

The LA Cancer Challenge is a Halloween celebration too! We encourage runners & walkers to attend in costume. Tutus, capes, wigs, headwear and festive outfits make our event unique! However, the LACC is a family-friendly event and we will enforce the following Costume Policy.

- Costumes may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.
- Masks are not allowed to be worn at all.
- Costumes may not contain any weapons, whatsoever, that could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
- Costumes may not contain sharp objects or materials that may accidentally harm another LACC participant.

Virtual Walk/Run Questions

What is a virtual walk/run?

A virtual walk/run can be completed any time, place and at any pace you choose. Take a stroll or jog in your neighborhood, time a 5K on your treadmill, use technology to count your steps walking at home or (if local and state guidelines allow) select a park, walking path or location where you can walk or run while practicing social distancing. The choice is yours!

What are the benefits of a virtual walk?

The Virtual LACC can be wherever and whenever you want with the benefit of still supporting a cause you care about and participating in a nationwide call-to-action. The LACC is on Halloween this year! We encourage a fun costume or simply wearing purple on Sunday, October 22nd.

How far or how long should I walk?

The annual LA Cancer Challenge is a 5K walk/run but if you want or need to run a shorter distance we won’t tell! You can also choose to go further but ultimately the goal is 3.1 miles.

Will there be an in-person live event?

Yes! Our event is scheduled for Sunday, October 22nd at Wilson Plaza on the UCLA campus. We are following local and state guidelines closely and are preparing for both in-person and virtual events.

Can I livestream or record my virtual LACC walk/run?

Absolutely! Livestreaming your walk/run is not required but it’s certainly fun. Livestreaming allows your community to join you remotely and cheer you on with encouraging messages. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to remind them you’re walking for pancreatic cancer research and ask them to donate in real time. Livestreaming options include the following social media platforms: Facebook Live, YouTube Live, LinkedIn Live or the Periscope streaming app to livestream on Twitter.

Choose to livestream your entire walk/run or simply stream for a few minutes when you start, as you finish or anytime in between. The choice is yours! *An alternative to livestreaming is to record your walk/run on a smartphone and share the video footage.

What should I talk about while livestreaming?

  • Why you’re walking or running for pancreatic cancer
  • Who you are dedicating your walk/run to (example: a family member, friend, the community of survivors or the researchers searching for a cure)
  • Your fundraising goal and asking loved ones to give what they can
  • Facts about pancreatic cancer
  • Patient & family services provided by the Hirshberg Foundation
  • Advances in pancreatic cancer research
  • Share the hashtags #LACancerChallenge or #LACC

How can I track my activity?

We have an app for that! Use our Good Move app to track your steps, whether on your daily walks or weekly training runs. Good Move links to existing fitness trackers or the tracking on your phone and you’ll earn points for your miles. With every activity you’ll be able to easily share your fundraising link directly with your community via text or on social. Join your peers on the leaderboard, earn great fundraising incentives, and help make an impact in our community.

Plus, throughout the month of October, all your activities will earn points towards our LA Cancer Challenge goal. Be sure to download the app and start logging your training steps and sharing with your community!

Fundraising Questions

You enter your Participant Center from the upper right hand corner of our home page. In your Participant Center, you can build or edit your personal or team webpage (you can edit the team webpage if you are the team captain), send emails to friends and family, enter offline donations, edit your profile, view your fundraising, and so much more. You need your username and password to enter your Participant Center. If you need help logging in, please contact us at info@pancreatic.org or 310-473-5121.

All participants, whether running as an individual or as a part of a team, are eligible to receive the fundraising incentives. Even if you are a part of a team, you will still have your own personal web page to collect donations. Both you and your team will receive credit for all donations you collect.

Winners medals are given out to the first, second and third place finishers in 28 divisions (14 male and 14 female) for each race.

Everyone is encouraged to raise money to help us fight to cure pancreatic cancer. Your fundraising is how we fund our Seed Grant Program and provide free patient & family support services. Plus, we offer great fundraising prizes to keep you motivated! All the funds raised through the LA Cancer Challenge support the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. For more information, please visit www.pancreatic.org.

We encourage you to utilize our online fundraising system to add donations you have received. You can easily add cash and check donations into your Participant Center as pledges. If you receive check donations, please mail them to:

Use our Matching Gift tool to see if you company will match. Be sure to tell your donors to check as well. Your fundraising can go twice as far with matching gifts!

We’ve partnered with Bonfire to help you design a great team shirt and raise funds in the process. Show off your team spirit with a custom design or keep it easy with one of our templates. Bonfire will print and ship all shirts directly to your supporters. Plus, proceeds from every shirt sold go towards your fundraising.
