Mary Louise Lopez was a gifted artist, devoted educator, and compassionate humanitarian whose life was dedicated to celebrating the beauty, dignity, and strength of others. Whether through her artwork, her classroom, or her volunteer work, she inspired those around her with her generosity, creativity, and love of learning.

As one of the first teachers to work in bilingual education in Texas, Mary Louise was passionate about helping every child succeed. She wrote stories and songs in Spanish for her students when bilingual resources were scarce and always made time to support those who needed extra encouragement.

Her love for Hispanic and Latino culture extended far beyond the classroom. Through her travels across Mexico, Central America, and South America, she built meaningful friendships with local artists and communities, drawing inspiration from their stories, traditions, and resilience. Her artwork celebrates the rich heritage and enduring spirit of Latino and Indigenous communities and has been featured in corporate and private collections around the world.

After a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, Mary Louise passed away in November 2022. She became a passionate advocate for early detection, encouraging everyone, especially the Hispanic community, to prioritize their health and get screened for cancer. Today, her legacy continues through this Tribute Fund and the Mary Louise Lopez Endowment for Pancreatic Cancer Research, helping advance research and bring hope to future generations.
