In September 2023, I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Statistics aren't in my favor, but as the Hirshberg Foundation says, I'm a statistic of 1!
I've undergone chemotherapy since my diagnosis, participated in a clinical trial at UCLA, and now continuing care after completing that trial, all proving hopeful.
In this last year of a life with pancreatic cancer, it has been a whirlwind of confusing and often simultaneous emotions, and the Hirshberg foundation has helped bring my humanity to the forefront. While vigorously promoting research, they also have been very personal in their support of so many survivors I've known, myself included.
I've met some wonderful, spirited people that are dealing with pancreatic cancer, and am proud to be part of a "team" for this event, many of the members are part of a keystone support group.
I've also lost a few friends to this disease in the last year. I miss them. I don't want anyone else to suffer the loss of a loved one for this aggressive disease. Heck, I don't want my loved ones to suffer the loss of me either!
So let's push funding and research a little further down the road!I remember when I started my initial chemotherapy, it seemed so daunting and overwhelming, but week by week, infusion by infusion, weeks turned into months, which turned into a year so far. So every little step helps, including your/my/our contributions to this cause!
Last year, I went to just support the cause, but I (and my walking sticks) ended up doing the entire course! It was an unexpected challenge I gave myself and ended up being one of the best memories of the year!
There are many good organizations to support survivors and research. The reason why I like Hirshberg and UCLA is because they really are trying to push our understanding of this disease and possible therapies and tools. I didn't realize I would be a direct beneficiary of their work as I am not under their care and see how aggressive in combating the disease while being incredibly caring for us.
Thanks!

I'm participating in the LA Cancer Challenge! The LACC helps the Hirshberg Foundation raise money to fund research and programs designed to improve patient care, offer better treatment options and, ultimately find a cure for pancreatic cancer.
Please consider contributing towards my fundraising efforts today. Or if you'd like, you can join me, in-person or virtually, for a day of costumes and fun, remembering those we have lost and celebrating those who are currently battling this disease. Together, regardless of where we are, we can make a huge difference in the battle against pancreatic cancer.
