Have fun and help find a cure for Pancreatic Cancer at the same time!
As many of you know, our father Norman was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in January of 2016. His father David died of Pancreatic Cancer in the early 90's and it never occurred to our father that this could be familial. Being a doctor he knew what it meant to be diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
My siblings and I owe so much to the amazing team at everyone at the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research and the team at The Agi Hirshberg Center for Pancreatic Research at UCLA for giving us and him 4.5 years of love and laughter.
In 2018, I did an Ironman 70.3 triathlon in honor of our father and turned it into a fundraiser for The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. NEVER did I think I would ever do anything with the words 'Iron' and 'Man' in the same sentence.
In November I will do another "NEVER did I" event to bring awareness about Pancreatic Cancer. Starting on November 4th, I will be cycling down the beautiful California Coastline from San Francisco to Los Angeles for the first ever Carabet's Crew Rides the Coast for Pancreatic Cancer in his memory and to raise money to find a cure and early detection for this insidious disease. I am fortunate to have a few friends who will be joining me along the way of what I hope will be the first of many rides down the coast to find a cure for Pancreatic Cancer.
~Pancreatic Cancer is currently the 3rd leading cause of cancer related death in the US after lung and colon cancers. The 5 year survival rate is just 11%.
~ 62,210 Americans will be diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and
~More than 49,830 will die from the disease.
Whether it's a family member, a friend or a colleague, many of us have been impacted one way or another by a Pancreatic Cancer diagnosis. I am hoping to raise $5,000 on this ride and the 5K Cancer Challenge. There are no minimums and whatever you can give no matter how big or small counts. Anyone who donates $350 or more will get a cycling jersey in honor of this ride.
Anyone who would like to join in this fun adventure is more than welcome to ride all of it, meet us along the way or even meet us in Westwood to ride that final mile to the Agi Hirshberg Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research at UCLA. If you don't ride, come on out and do the walk/run at UCLA on October 23rd. Bring the kids and grandkids for a fun event to find a cure!
This is an opportunity to fight back on behalf of our loved ones! Thank-you to all of you for your love, support and friendships.
Cheers,
Deb
