Welcome to Nancy Ellin's Page
In Memory of Joan, June and Lisa
This year will be my 13th LA Cancer Challenge race, benefiting the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer. As most of you know, I lost my Mom, Joan Tucker, to this devastating disease 28 years ago, this past July. One of my dearest friends, Lisa Berger lost her life to this disease at the young age of 45 years old, just 12 years ago this past July. Along with my Mom and Lisa, I lost my mother-in-law, June Ellin 11 years ago August to other circumstances. These 3 women have touched my life in different ways and I continually dedicate my run to all of them.
This year marks the 23rd annual LA Cancer Challenge, which takes place on Sunday October 25th, virtually. Anyone can participate with me from anywhere at any pace! Last year I raised almost $31,000! This amount was the most money I have raised individually to date since I began my fundraising efforts for the Hirshberg Foundation 13 years ago. I am so excited to report that at last year’s race, I was honored as a celebrated LACC top fundraiser for 2019 and a top fundraiser collectively raising over $235,000 since my involvement. Last year there were almost 2,000 participants and the total raised for the LA Cancer Challenge was $460,000. I am so proud to be an important part of the Hirshberg Foundation’s funding and consistently involved for the past 13 years. Please help me achieve my fundraising goal of at least $30,000. I know my mother is looking down and smiling.
We have been in challenging times this year. We all have been affected in different ways by this global pandemic. We are a strong nation and I know we will get through this together. Cancer is still a huge part of our world. We cannot give up this fight to find cures and remedies to help this disease. I am pleased to share with you that Under the Cares Act of 2020, donors can now get a Federal Income Tax deduction for charitable contributions up to 100% off Adjusted Gross Income. This opportunity is slated to end December 31,2020 but it can be used in subsequent years as well. Please consult your tax advisor whether this option will work for you.
In supporting my goal, you are helping the mission of The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer, which is to find a cure for pancreatic cancer. The Hirshberg Foundation is the first foundation in the world created specifically for pancreatic cancer research. Currently pancreatic cancer is the third-ranked cancer related deaths in the US among both men and women surpassing breast cancer and has the highest mortality rate of all cancers. Nearly 57,600 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year and over 47,050 will die from this disease. Despite this, the federal government invests less money in pancreatic cancer than any other leading cancer.
Pancreatic cancer diagnosis is increasing with more and more young struck each year. The funds raised by the LA Cancer Challenge, support the Hirshberg Foundation Seed Grant program for the Hirshberg Foundation patient and family support programs. For many years, many researchers have remained committed to determining the cause of pancreatic cancer but more and more, we’re seeing projects shift towards curing the disease. The grants that Hirshberg receive are from doctors in Internal Medicine, Pharmacology, Bio Medical Engineering, Surgery, Genomic Medicine and Radiation Oncology. The message from 53 universities is clear, patients need improved care. Early stage drug discovery, overcoming drug resistance, liquid biopsy, what promotes cancer progression and molecular imaging are additional topics under review.
I plea with you all to support this very important cause that is increasingly affecting many of us. Early diagnosis and more treatment options to increase survival rate is imperative for pancreatic cancer. Each Seed Grant funded is a steppingstone to saving lives.
You may join my team “Team Ellin” and “run with me “virtually to raise these funds or you can simply sponsor me for my race. Please visit my web page – “Team Ellin” at http://support.pancreatic.org/goto/nancy. If you wish to mail a check, please make check payable to “The Hirshberg Foundation” and mail it to 2990 S. I am humbled by your consistent support and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your “never give up” attitude while we search for the cure! The times we are living in are difficult for all of us, but my commitment to a fight for a cure is a promise I will keep.
Thank you in advance for your support.
