KELLY & TEAM ONE LOVE
I have been sweating it out and fundraising for cancer charities for nearly a decade now, but this time it's different. The cause remain just as worthy, the sweat will come just as steadily, and the smile will beam just as brightly. But this time, I am a cancer survivor and will be celebrating health!
In 2017, I joined Team One Love with a passion against cancer, motivation to do good, and inspiration to give back! I rode with pride and love for two years, and then in May 2019 was unable to ride with my team. This year's L.A. event was 2 weeks after my breast reconstructive surgery, and the doc told me it wasn't a possibility.
I learned I was BRCA2 positive after my sister was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer the summer of 2017. A short 3 months later, it would be my mom who was diagnosed. After their successful battles, I made the decision to delay the possiblity of a second child to undergo a preventative double mastectomy. I had the chance to avoid breast cancer and remain healthy for my little Theo, my husband and the rest of my family. So, damn straight, that's what I did! This past January, I kicked off the year with a bilateral mastectomy. Days later came the shocking news. I had breast cancer too. Turns out, I made the right choice at the right time!
When I found out Tour de Pier was holding it's inaugural event in Seattle, I knew I had to be there! Seattle is where my family is from. It's where I went to college (woof) and it's where Huma and I first met! Come September, I will be a healthy member of Team One Love. It would mean the world to me, to have you with me....in person or in spirit!
All participants will be riding in place to move charity forward! The Tour de Pier brings hundreds of stationary cycling bikes to Lake Union Park for five, energetically themed hour-long rides while creating awareness and raising funds for three outstanding cancer charities: Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, the Virginia Mason Cancer Institute and the Uncle Kory Foundation.
Your generous contribution of any amount to my fundraising efforts is priceless! This is not an Ironman tri, but it is just as big in my heart! Here's to those we have lost, to the warriors who fight, and to all those that remain healthy and strong! Together we can make a huge difference so that no one faces cancer alone. Let's do this! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
