I'm Riding For My Mom
I'll be riding in place to move charity forward at the Tour de Pier! The Tour de Pier brings hundreds of stationary cycling bikes to the iconic Manhattan Beach Strand to create awareness and raise funds for three outstanding cancer charities: Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, the Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach and the Uncle Kory Foundation.
In October of last year my mom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. It's been a very difficult past 6 months. Less than two months after her diagnosis she was unable to walk and care for herself. She was deteriorating rapidly. In mid January her local oncologist transfered her to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for further evaluation.
The team at The Mayo, we like to call them Angels, saved my mom's life. Not only were they able to determine what was wrong (her medications were not appropriate) they got her believing in herself again. With intense rehabilitation including occupational and physical therapy, she learned how to walk and in mid March was able to go back home.
The Mayo Clinic, like many research hospitals in the country are non-profit and rely heavily on fundraising efforts just like Tour de Pier to pay for the research that finds cures and advanced treatments for cancers like multiple myeloma. 20 years ago someone receiving this diagnosis would not have had many options and would be given months to live. Now, with the years of research that has been done on medications, stem-cell transplants and other therapies patients with multiple myeloma can live a productive life for years.
I know I can not discover the cure for multiple myeloma or any other cancer but I can do my part by rasiing awareness and participating in fundraising events like Tour de Pier. My goal is to raise $1,000. Will you help me get there?
Please consider contributing towards my fundraising efforts today. Or if you'd like, you can join me for a day of fun at the beach, a great ride, remembering those we have lost and celebrating those who are currently battling this disease. Together we can make a huge difference so that no one faces cancer alone. Let's ride in place and move charity forward!
